Overview of History in Years 7-9

History is compulsory during the first three years of the senior school and is taught as an autonomous subject within mixed ability groups.

Students in Years 7 and 8 cover units on Medieval Realms (including a depth study on the Crusades), the Making of the UK 1603-c.1666, and the American West c. 1845-1890. In Year 9, units on the Britain and the Great War and the USA 1880-1941 are studied. Therefore, as well as looking at the history of their own country, students from Year 7 onwards are introduced to topics in European history. They also study a non-European civilisation and look at some recent issues in world history.

This range of topics allows students to experience medieval, early modern and modern history, thereby enaling them to make more informed choices when GCSE options are being selected, and to have studied a wide range of themes and periods even if they then cease to study the subject.
